Best Farmer competitions reach final stage

This year's edition which is under the theme 'Farming as a business, from farm to the market' will see the best ten farmers walking away with sh150m.

After assessing farmers from West Nile, Northern and Western regions, today the judges have embarked on the Central region to finalise the judgement exercise.

The judge's led by Victoria Sekitoleko, Chairperson, Uganda Agribusiness Alliance and a former Minister of Agriculture,  Augustine Mwendya, former Chief Executive Officer, Uganda National Farmers' Federation, Dr. Emma Naluyima, Best Farmer, 2014, Josephat Byaruhanga, Senior Agribusiness Adviser, Dutch Embassy and Edward Ssenkindu, Senior Manager Agriculture and Informal Segment, dfcu Bank are to soon there report on who will be the best farmers.

The winners will be announced on November 29, 2019.
This year's edition which is under the theme 'Farming as a business, from farm to the market' will see the best ten farmers walking away with sh150m. They will also be rewarded with a fully sponsored to the Netherlands where they will have an opportunity to visit Dutch farmers and learn from them.

The annual Uganda Best Farmers' competition is sponsored by Vision Group in partnership with the Netherlands Embassy in Uganda, dfcu Bank, KLM Airlines and Koudijs Nutrition BV.

Speaking after visiting one of the farmers in Mukono, Dr. Emma Naluyima said we are looking for a farmer who will be a role model for the community. 

"We want a farmer, be it poultry, piggery farmer, etc from whom both the community and students can learn", said Dr. Naluyima, one of the judges, emphasised.

The profiling of the farmers started in March this year, looking at the uniqueness of the farm and it's a contribution to the community.

During the assessment, the judges looked at farming as a business, farm management, post-harvest handling, and the farm's succession plan. 

Other key areas considered are record keeping and farm finances, environmental conservation practices, value addition, innovation and technology, and linkage to markets.
