Police clarifies deployment in Kiseka Market

Nov 05, 2019

"The deployment intended to foil a planned illegal rally that traders had organized and was to be addressed by the Kyadondo legislator, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine."

The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango has clarified on the heavy deployment in different points of Kiseka market, down town in Kampala.

The clarification comes shortly after security operatives in uniform and plain clothes, at around 11:45 am stormed the market on Tuesday, leaving traffic and business paralyzed.

In his statement, Onyango said that the deployment intended to foil a planned illegal rally that traders had organized and was to be addressed by the Kyadondo legislator, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.

According to Onyango, Police was not notified on the intended meeting, yet the Public Order Management Act guarantees the organizers to notify the law enforcers.  "Kiseka Market is a busy place that we cannot allow a rally to take place because it will inconvenience other traders who are not part of the meeting.

So we had to deploy to prevent any possible breach of law and order," Onyango said.  However, the People Power spokesman, Joel Ssenyonyi said that they had no idea about the alleged rally.

"We have no idea about that rally; Hon. Kyagulanyi had other engagements altogether," Ssenyonyi said.  He added that the traders have freedom to assemble and express themselves whenever they feel like.
