Maxwell Odera, the finance manager of Fiduga Ltd, was among the winners in the recently concluded Chief Finance Officer Awards organised by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Uganda in partnership with Deloitte. Odera, who won the CFO Award in the SME category talked to New Vision's Owen Wagabaza about the award and the flower sector in general. Below are the excerpts of the interview.

What is Fiduga Ltd all about?

Fiduga Limited is a subsidiary of Dummen Orange in the Netherlands, a company that specialises in the breeding and propagation of cut and pot chrysanthemums, kalanchoe, calandiva, pelargonium, osteospermum, impatiens, dahlia, multiflora, petunia, nemesia, calibrachoa and pot asters. It is located 22km from Kampala on Masaka Road at Nsimbe Estates.

Fiduga focuses is on the production and 100% exportation of exclusive environmentally-friendly cut and pot chrysanthemum cuttings that qualify for international markets. The company employs over 800 workers, with an annual production volume of over 600 million cuttings in a 22 hectare production location. Our vision is to produce quality products through continuous improvement and to enrich the lives of our staff and the community.

Fiduga is IS0 9001:2015 and MPS (milieu programma sierteelt) certified. MPS is a European certification body that focuses on good agricultural practices that is environmentally sustainable (ABC) and also focuses on employee welfare (socially qualified).

Fiduga is also a member of the United Nations Global Compact. These certifi cations have enabled the company to achieve a structured quality management system. The company started the modern integrated pest management system that consists of the use of soft chemicals with integration of natural methods of pest control—this has been done in combination with green care project (phytosanitary hygiene protocols), which ensures that the workers have adequate and appropriate protective gears to provide a safe, hygienic and healthy working environment.
