Prophet Mbonye fails to report to Police, his bond extended

Nov 04, 2019

Police are investigating claims that he posted misleading information about the vaccination exercise being carried out by the Ministry of Health

Elvis Mbonye, who was expected to appear at the Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Directorate (CIID) headquarters at Kibuli, for interrogation, over alleged sabotage of government's immunisation programme, failed to turn up on Monday.

However, Mbonye of the Zoe Fellowship Ministries, who was represented by two lawyers, was said to be having a meeting in a place, which was not disclosed.

"The lawyers appeared at the headquarters and indicated that Mbonye was unable to come because he had a meeting that he had fixed a month ago," CID public relations officer, Charles Mansio Twine revealed.

Twine further revealed that Mbonye's bond has been extended to next week, on Monday.

According to sources, Mbonye's lawyers met the acting commissioner Media Crimes Department, SSP Henry Mugumya, and held talks over the issue for about five minutes before they left.

The Police are investigating claims that Mbonye posted misleading information about the vaccination exercise being carried out by the health ministry.

It is purported that Mbonye discouraged parents from taking their children for immunisation against three killer diseases like measles, rubella, and polio.

The national immunisation drive, which targeted children aged 15 years and below, is expected to end early this month.

Twine says if Mbonye is found guilty or any other person to that effect, he or she shall be charged under Section 23 (i) (ii) of the Immunisation Act, 2017.

According to the Act, a person shall not make, cause to be made or publish any misleading statement or information regarding the use or effect of any vaccines.

A person who contravenes this section, on conviction, pays a fine not exceeding forty-eight currency points (about sh960,000) or imprisonment not exceeding two years or both.

However, Mbonye has dismissed the allegations as false, saying the person, who posted the information bears a similar name as his.
