6:51 pm | Uganda Premier League

Onduparaka made light work of Tooro United to move into 3rd place in the Uganda Premier League following a 3-0 win at the Greenlight Stadium in Arua.

Goals came from captain Gadafi Wahab who converted a penalty on 18 minutes before Julius Malingumu found the back of the net on the stroke of halftime. Gibson Adinho sealed the win with a well-taken strike on 60 minutes to leave the Caterpillers five points off top-of-the-table Vipers.

6:40 pm | What Mbonye faces

 

Elvis Mbonye faces criminal charges under Section 23 (i) (ii) of the Immunisation Act, 2017.

According to the Act, a person shall not make, cause to be made or publish any misleading statement or information regarding the use or effect of any vaccines.

A person who contravenes this section, on conviction, pays a fine not exceeding forty-eight currency points (about sh960,000) or imprisonment not exceeding two years or both.

6:25 pm | FUFA retains Mubiru & Mbabazi

FUFA has maintained Abdallah Mubiru and Livingstone Mbabazi as assistant coaches of the national team on an interim basis.

The duo guided the Uganda Cranes to qualification the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) and will work under head coach Jonathan McKinstry.

Acting FUFA president Justus Mugisha says Mubiru and Mbabazi will serve for six months until permanent assistants are announced.

5:45 pm | It wasn't Mbonye - Kabuleta 

Joseph Kabuleta while addressing today purported that it was not Elvis Mbonye who posted the statements against immunisation on social media, saying it is another person who has a name similar to Mbonye's.

"Mbonye has a social media account, which is greatly followed by thousands of people and the person who posted the statements bears a name similar to his," he stated.

Kabuleta said that during Mbonye's first appearance at Kibuli two days ago, he told the Police that he was not the one who posted the statements but somebody else. Following this, Kabuleta says the matter should have been concluded.

"Mugisha Elvis Mbonye is not Prophet Elvis Mbonye. These are different people, although they have similar names," Kabuleta emphasised.

5:27 pm | Three drown in River Rwizi

Two bodies out of the three people that drowned in River Rwizi have been recovered by members of the public as the search for the other continues.

The body of Mbarara Municipal Primary School estates manager Eldard Mwesigye, 53, was recovered on Wednesday while that of Osten Byamugisha, 21, was recovered on Tuesday in Karugangama ward in Kakoba division.

According to eyewitnesses, Byamugisha and a colleague drowned while trying to save Mwesigye — a father of five whose daughter graduated over the weekend with a law degree from Bishop Stuart University — who was allegedly attempting to commit suicide and was carrying weights in a bag.

A scuffle ensued between Byamugisha's relatives and the Police when the family members barred Police from taking the body for a postmortem.

4:59 pm | University Football League final postponed

The final of the 2019 Pepsi University Football League that was scheduled for this Sunday at Namboole Stadium has been postponed.

This comes after the stadium management elected to rest the playing surface for refurbishment following the recent heavy rains that have left it in a poor state.

According to the organising committee secretary, Akwech Samuel, the finals between UCU and St Lawrence University and the 3rd place playoff between Bugema University and Uganda Martyrs University have been postponed as an alternative venue is secured.

River Nkusi today burst its banks cutting off traffic between Kagadi and Kakumiro districts. Residents are appealing to the government to at least close the road because it is becoming very risky to cross.

 4:02 pm | Benin's Houngnandande to officiate crunch KCCA match

Benin's Djindo Louis Houngnandande will officiate KCCA's CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round return leg against Algeria's Paradou.

Houngnandande will be assisted by Kodjori Sylvain Ogoudedji and Lucien Todegnon Hontonnou as assistant referees while Seraphin Sourou Adounsi Sourou will be the fourth official and Egypt's Karam Kordy Abdel Fattah the match commissioner.

The two sides played out a goalless draw clashed in the first leg played on Sunday in Kampala. The team departs Thursday for the match to be played on Sunday at Stade du 5 Juillet 1962.

3:23 pm | Makerere suspends students

The management of Makerere University has today taken disciplinary action against students it claims destroyed university property, injured fellow students and damaged property of businesses operating outside the institution.

Nine students have been suspended and others warned about their future conduct.

The suspended students are Frank Bwambale, Siperia Saasiraabo, Rogers Mbajjo Ssebiraalo, Derrick Ojambo Wabwire, David Musiri, Ivan Kyeyune, Seiz Mutatina, Job Dhabona and Simon Ssenoga.

The students who have been cautioned are Marion Kirabo, Sarah Aminah Namiiro, Mariam Kyomugasho Mugisha, Annah Ashaba, Rodney Kiggundu, Lydia Omunyokol, Judith Nalukwago, Anitah Musiimenta Anitah, Peninnah Mwesigwa Balambi, Pamerah Nyangoma, Elith Nabimanya, Benjamin Ahikiriza, Isaiah Sserwadda, Marvin Nyinamanyonyi, Vicent Kayondo, Epaphrus Ouma, Joseph Tumusiime, Nicky Babirye Namisi, Tyson Mutangana, Allan Mutagubya, Derrick Agaba, Erasmus Oreret, Elvis Omoit, Edgar Ayebazibwe, Ronald Waswa and Lukman Bukenya.

2:33 pm | Elvis Mbonye's bond extended

Elvis Mbonye of the Zoe Fellowship Ministries arrived at the Criminal Investigations Division (CIID) headquarters, in Kibuli, Kampala in a fleet of eight cars.

His minders dressed in blue suits dramatically surrounded his Range Rover to shield him from the press as he reported to the station as required under his bond conditions.

He remained in the vehicle and his assistants led by Joseph Kabuleta and lawyer Simon Senyonga, later told the media that the bond had been extended to Monday.

 

 

"This is the third time the summons have been honoured but the matter, which is ‘simple' has not yet been concluded and we wonder why it has been stretched this far but we shall continue to cooperate with the Police," he said.

The former Kalaki County Member of Parliament, Simon Rose Euku, has passed away.

According to family sources, the former MP died at about midday at his home in Nansana where he been getting care.

He had been battling a brain-related illness and at the time of his death, the family was preparing to take him to hospital for review.

Entebbe Mongers Rugby Club faces Toyota Buffaloes in the Uganda Cup quarterfinal game with on Saturday at the House of Pain in Entebbe and they will do that in a new kit they received from their sponsors Plascon today.

 

 

"This is a boost to us and as a team, we are going for a win. Buffaloes may be a strong side, but know that this is a knockout tournament and we shall have no mercy on them," said captain Andrew Olwenyi.

 

 

The club has signed four players for the new season; Amos Malik, Brian Oroma, Moses Laboke and Brian Mwebembezi from various universities.

In preparedness for the floods that have hit some parts of the country hard, the Office of the Prime Minister has made deliveries of relief food and non-food commodities to 24 of the most flood-prone districts.

The districts are Butaleja, Katakwi, Serere, Amuria, Bukomansimbi, Rukiga, Adjumani, Namutumba, Tororo, Ntoroko, Gomba, Alebtong, Ngora, Kween, Namisindwa, Bulambuli, Bududa, Sironko, Manafwa, Kamwenge, Obongi, Kyegegwa, Lamwo and Yumbe.

Each district has received 30 tons of rice while Butaleja, Katakwi, Serere and Amuria have in addition received blankets, jerrycans, soap, buckets, spades, sleeping mats and polythene sheeting.

As the standoff at Makerere University over the 15% hike in fees continues, students on Wednesday broke into the residence of the former guild president Papa Salim Were and torched his property.

Were was part of the negotiations that agreed on the 15% figure in 2018 that the students have been protesting against and today, his residence in Nsibirwa Hall was looted and some of his property set alight.

 

 

 

President Yoweri Museveni yesterday ordered the army out of Makerere University following an outcry from students and the general public that the security deployed at the university had meted violence against the students. There had been complaints from students and student leaders that the Military Police stormed university hostels and halls of residence, beating up students.

The Office of the Prime Minister has issued the following floods risk alert to the public as heavy rains continue to pound parts of the country.

  • The General Public is informed that the rain-season is currently at its peak.
  • People are strongly advised not to walk or to allow a driver or bodaboda rider to take them through a flooded road or bridge even when the floods appear very low below the knees or rim of the car.
  • It takes only about 15 mins for most flash-floods to clear. Please wait until the flash-floods have cleared.

Since losing the Katakwi district woman MP race in the 2016 general elections, former education minister Jessica Alupo retreated to her village in Oigo Imwomwa, Ongongoja sub-county in Katakwi district where she has been tending to her herd and gardens as plots her political comeback.

 

Alupo lost the seat in a bitterly contested election to Violet Akurut Adome who beat the minister in the NRM primaries with a margin of over 3000 votes before edging her in the general elections with over 5000 votes.

10:10 am | Kazibwe to lead AU mission for Mauritius elections

The African Union (AU) has disclosed that the former Vice President, Dr Specioza Wandira Kazibwe, will lead the AU Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) to Mauritius's parliamentary elections, slated for November 7.

Kazibwe who is currently serving as the chairperson of the AU Panel of the Wise and Co-chairperson of FemWise, is leading a 40-member AU short-term election observers' mission to Mauritius, which will stay in the Island nation from October 31 to November 12 as part of its election observation mission, the 55-member pan African bloc.

The 40-member AUEOM is composed of ambassadors from the Permanent Representatives' Committee of the AU, parliamentarians from the Pan-African Parliament, election administrators, civil society, media and electoral experts, it was noted.

The election observers' mission will release a statement on its preliminary findings and observations on the conduct of the elections few days after Mauritius's Parliamentary Elections.
