Ssekandi said churches do a good job by helping the Government build schools and health centres but the issue of fighting poverty and keeping peace among the followers should also be prioritised.

The Vice-President, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has advised religious leaders to use their churches to preach the gospel of hard work and peace in order to have a better country.

Ssekandi said churches do a good job by helping the Government build schools and health centres but the issue of fighting poverty and keeping peace among the followers should also be prioritised.

He emphasized that this will help the country achieve middle-income status as per the Vision 2020-2040.

"Our focus as Government and churches should be on mobilising our people to work hard so that every family has enough food for consumption and sale. Each household should have an income to help them take care of their needs," Ssekandi said.

Ssekandi said this while officiating at the fundraising drive for St. Peter's Church Nabisoigi in Nabweyo sub-county, Namutumba district on Friday on the invitation of Bukono county area Member of Parliament and State Minister for Lands, Persis Namuganza.

The Vice-President offered sh5m in cash to the church and advised the Rev. Fr. Francis Musasizi to put the money collected to proper use so that the house of God is completed.

During the same ceremony, Namutumba district speaker, Emmanuel Maganda who has expressed interest in the Bukono County MP seat, donated 50 bags of cement and bought a goat at sh1m plus other items worth sh450,000.

Namuganza herself bought things valued at sh340,000 before other people joined the fundraising. Altogether, over sh9m was collected in cash and sh5m in pledges.

Namuganza in her speech thanked the people of Bukono county for putting trust in her and urged them to focus on development.

"I urge you the people of Bukono to unite and develop your families. Don't waste time on politics now, when the time for politics comes we shall come and look for votes," Namuganza advised.

Rev. Fr. Francis Musasizi who is the Parish Priest for Namunyumya parish that supervises St. Peter's Church Nabisoigi thanked the Vice President, Ssekandi and Namuganza for organizing the function to build the house of God whose construction had stalled.

The construction of St. Peter's new church started in March 2016 by the Kaggwas family and other Catholics in the area but it had come to a halt following the death of Joseph Kaggwa in October 2018. He was the main funder for the construction work.
