MURDER   STREET KIDS

JINJA - A Police officer attached to the Jinja taxi park Police Post in Jinja Municipality has been hacked to death with a panga by unknown street kids.

According to the Jinja Resident District Commissioner, Eric Sakwa, Street Kids turned into Street men hacked Cpl. George Tanga in front of the Police post in Jinja taxi park, after he had arrested one of them with suspected stolen iron bars and other building materials.

"Tanga was killed at about 5:00 am on Thursday morning and I received information about his death at about 5:40 am. His body was laying in a pool of blood near the Jinja taxi park Police post, I drove from my place of residence in Walukuba to the scene and found Tanga's body still in a pool of blood," Sakwa said.

Sakwa said after Street kids killing Tanga, they fled and left his gun at the scene which was recovered by other Police officers.

According to other eyewitnesses, Tanga heard someone yelling for help after street kids had stolen iron bars and he immediately chased the thugs and arrested one of them.

It's alleged that on his way taking one of the thugs at the Police, another thug who had a panga came and hacked him by the neck side and fell on the ground prompting them (thugs) to flee.

Sakwa expressed concern over the increasing numbers of Street kids in Jinja Municipality adding that the numbers are shooting to over 300 street kids in Jinja.

"I have been advising Police in security meetings to conduct operations and foot patrols in the town centre so that we arrest most of the street kids but they have been adamant to take action until their own has been killed," Sakwa said.

He said Street Kids move with machetes, pangas, sharp objects, metal bars, and small axes among others at night.

He added that almost all roads in Jinja town are impassable due to the insecurity in the town.

Sakwa said roads or streets like Spire, Gabula, Narambhai, Kutch, Bax, Nile Avenue and Iganga road among others have been made impassable at night.

He further urged the Deputy Inspector General of Police Sabiiti Muzeyi to come to Jinja and sort out his Policemen on issues regarding conducting operations because he feels he is being failed by Police.
