Grace Kasango will be looking to defend his title when the 23rd edition of the Kinyara Sugar Golf Open tees off at the Kinyara course in Masindi on Friday.

Last year Kasango edged Tooro Club's Joseph Cwinyai on countback to win the annual championship whose launch for this year's edition was held at Kitante yesterday.

The professionals are first in the fray, contesting for sh12m, up from ten last year, alongside the 0-5 handicapped golfers from across the country.

Addressing the media during the launch, the communications manager for Kinyara Mathias Wanok said like the previous events, this year they had been joined by their partners; UAP Old Mutual, LIAISON, ICEA and Jubilee Insurance to make the event successful.

The sponsors were represented by Daniel Kairu (ICEA), Carol Tayebwa (UAP), Arthur Kintu (Jubilee Insurance) and Sarah Siryowe (LIAISON).

"We take pride in this event because we want to make it one of the memorable events anyone can ever think about and we are taking strategic steps to make it the best," Wanok said.

"We want Bunyoro Kitara to become a tourist destination so that the golfers and sponsors can have a feel of the tournament whenever they come,"

He said the prize for a hole-in-one prize stands at half a ton of sugar worth sh1.8m at the dreaded hole-No.7.

Kinyara golf captain Geoffrey Agundri said they had refurbished the course and golfers will find soft greens.

"We have invited golfers from all over the country because this is a union event and we expect a full house. We are also providing 3 buses to transport the golfers from Kitante, setting off on Thursday and Friday morning," Angudri promised.

"We are keen on promoting this event because we want to ensure this unique sport is recognised as we continue supporting talent. Golf being a unique sport, we want people to recognise that it is not just an event but a network session where we get together to support a social cause," Tayebwa said before unveiling a sh35m sponsorship for the two-day event.
