FDC cautions Police on disruption of rallies

KAMPALA -The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has warned Police against the continuous disruption of its activities.

Addressing journalists at Najjanankumbi based party headquarters in Kampala on Monday, the party spokesperson, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, revealed that the party had resumed countrywide mobilisation drive aimed at combing out support for the party during the fourth coming general elections.

Ssemujju reported that on Saturday Police violently dispersed FDC's public rally in Mbale arresting the party president Eng. Patrick Amuriat and a number of their supporters.

"We had just concluded a meeting with FDC leaders in the area. Interestingly the same Police which we dully informed about these activities as the law requires stopped our rally," he said.

The party held meetings and rallies in Kasilo, Soroti and Kumi.

"It appears to us that the reason Mbale rally was disrupted was to kill the momentum we had gained after the Teso activities. Of course as announced earlier, we will continue with our programme with or without Police clearance," he said.

When contacted the Police spokesperson Fred Enanga noted that the assembly was unlawful and the venue is not convenient.

"FDC were to hold indoor meetings with party members but not illegal demonstrations and processions that result into inciting of violence through hate campaigns and abusive language," he said.

According to Ssemujju, Eng. Amuriat and the former party Presidential flag-bearer, Dr.Col. Kizza Besigye are leading the mobilisation drive.

Ssemujju noted that this week, FDC will be in Hoima district to campaign for their Woman MP candidate Asinasi Kamanda Nyakato facing off with NRM's Harriet Businge Mugenyi.

The MP seat fell vacant after Ms. Tophace Kaahwa Byagira (NRM) chose to represent the newly created Kikuube district that was carved out of Hoima in July 2018.

"We will thereafter cross to Kaabong in Karamoja where we are also tussling it out with NRM for the district woman MP," Ssemujju said.
