KAMPALA - The State Minister of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives Amelia Kyambadde has said they are set to participate in the Dubai 2020 expo that is slated to take place in Dubai United Arab Emirates from October 20, 2020, to April 10, 2021.

The main objective of Uganda's participation in the expo is to get exposure and link the Ugandan business community to the international business community as well as promoting tourism.

According to Kyambadde, over 190 countries are expected to participate in the expo under the theme "correcting minds, creating the future."

"This will be the first international Exposition to be held in the Middle East region, it is, therefore, a platform for Uganda to showcase its trade, investment and tourism potential to the Middle East market as a whole," Kyambadde said.

She added that through the expo, Uganda will create linkages in Uganda and the participating countries.

"Uganda's top five export products to the UAE were gold, fish, fruits and vegetables, oilseeds. Ugandans will, therefore, focus on promoting coffee, fruits, tea, and vegetables following a strategic export of products to the Middle East that accounted for 19% of the country's formal merchandise exports tallying to US$ 599m, which is equivalent to 90% of revenue coming from UAE unaided," she said.

She revealed that Uganda has received support from the Expo organizers, UAE, in the form of Pavilion construction.

"The construction is completed and structure shall be handed over for the second phase of branding, decoration, and beautification in October 2019," Kyambadde said.

The last World Expo was held in Milan the capital of Italy.  Since the 1850s, world expos have been held every after five years, to gather nations dedicated to finding solutions to pressing challenges including issues of trade and development.
