ISO probes missing gun in Kyotera

The Internal Security Organisation (ISO) is investigating circumstances under which a policeman in Kyotera district lost a gun with 29 rounds of ammunition.

According to sources in ISO, unknown thugs broke into the home of detective Sgt Willy Kasujja and stole a Police sub-machine gun (SMG) rifle number UGPOL 56-3613854/20779 with 29 rounds of ammunition. Kasujja is attached to Kasasa Police Post in Kyotera district.

"The circumstances behind this shocking incident are that; he (Kasujja) claims his house was broken into and picked one of the three guns that were in the house," the source revealed.

However, Kasujja's house did not have any marks of a break-in. Kasujja was acting as the armoury officer at Kasasa Police Post, which has the strength of five Police personnel.

Investigators also established that Kasujja never called his boss, the Kyotera District Police Commander (DPC), until the DPC learnt of the matter from the district crime intelligence officer.

The source revealed that the district ISO chief (DISO) together with the Police led by the Kyotera DPC visited the crime scene and arrested Kasujja for interrogation.

Another suspect, a civilian who is said to be a habitual criminal was also arrested after residents suspected that he could be involved in the theft.

Three other police officers attached to Kasasa Police Post were also taken to Kyotera Police Station for questioning. ISO has since dispatched a team from the headquarters in Kampala to Kyotera to carry out investigations and gather information in an effort to recover the gun.

According to the 2018 annual Police crime report, the police recovered 167 guns and 2,284 ammunition/bullets from wrong elements.

Out of these, the biggest number of guns (73) were SMGs and they were recovered with 1,736 live ammunition.
