India Day celebrations launched

This year’s celebrations seek to support the girl child especially the young girls who drop out of school due to limited or no access to sanitary pads.
KAMPALA - The Indian High Commission officially kicked off celebrations ahead of the Indian Independence Day on August 31.
The fun-filled event took place at the Indian High Commission on Thursday were over 500 Indians showed up to witness their cultural performances.
The highlight of the event was the presence of Miss Uganda, Oliver Nakakande.
All the performances which included dance, musical dramas, and folk songs reflected the significance of India Day.
Interestingly, most of the performances were led by talented children who left the guests in awe.
This year's celebrations seek to support the girl child especially the young girls who drop out of school due to limited or no access to sanitary pads.
At the event, the Indian high commission in partnership with Miss Uganda Foundation launched a campaign to support girls with free sanitary material. The campaign will be championed by the new beauty queen, Nakakande.
According to the Indian High Commissioner Shri Ravi Shankar, there're so many girls in Uganda who are facing a problem when it comes to accessing sanitary pads.
He added that it is upon this background that the Indian High Commission came out to support these girls and spread awareness.
The event was climaxed with a cake cutting session led by Nakakande. The celebrations will continue from August 15 till August 31 when the official event which will be held at Kololo independence grounds.
