Omukama Oyo cautions subjects on tree cutting

Oyo while addressing his subjects at Bukuku town council headquarters Monday said he had launched a campaign to plant 10 million trees in all parts of the kingdom within five years.

KABAROLE-The Omukama of Toro kingdom Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has asked residents of Burahya County in Kabarole district to stop engaging in massive tree cutting.

Oyo while addressing his subjects at Bukuku town council headquarters Monday said he had launched a campaign to plant 10 million trees in all parts of the kingdom within five years.

He also directed each student of Nyakasura School to plant a tree along the boundaries of the school.

"We must preserve the environment by planting more trees and let's avoid planting eucalyptus trees in wetlands because they consume a lot of water and the wetlands may dry up," Oyo said.

Oyo noted that forests in the county were being cleared and the tree cover getting depleted by charcoal burners.  

"We need to restore all wetlands as one way of fighting extreme weather conditions," Oyo said.

Margret Muhanga the Burahya County Member of Parliament said that as leaders they are ready to implement the king's directives.

"As leaders, we are ready to work with the kingdom and other kingdom officials to ensure that we offer our people better services," Muhanga said.

Every year towards the coronation anniversary, the king conducts visits to all the counties in the kingdom.
