TO CONTROL MERCURY USE IN THE ARTISANAL AND SMALL-SCALE GOLD MINING (ASGM) SECTOR

Background:

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) implemented by UNDP and Executed by UNOPS supports community based initiatives, which aim at securing global environmental benefts through community-level actions in the areas of biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation & adaptation, protection of international waters, chemicals and waste management and reversal/prevention of land degradation.

Mercury is a dangerous neurotoxic metal that is now ubiquitous in the global environment due to decades of unchecked anthropogenic releases. In Uganda through releases from mercury added products, waste disposal, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), and other sources, mercury pollutes soils, waterways and people. To significantly reduce exposure to mercury, coordinated international, national and local action is needed.
