Two ex-M23 combatants arrested over Kisoro lawyer's murder

KISORO - Police in Kisoro district are holding in cells two former M23 rebel group combatants, one Boda Boda rider and three other people suspected to be in connection with the recent murder of Kisoro based lawyer, Isaac Sendegeya.

Sendgeya was shot on July 21 as he entered his home in Kisoro Municipality at around 01:00 am. Since then, the number of people including businessmen and politicians has condemned increased cases of gun violence, attributing it to illegal guns in communities. 

The arrested, according to Police are; 33-year-old Charles Munyaneza a.k.a Seuhasha Saddam, a refugee from Nakivale Refugee settlement camp in Isingiro and 42-year-old Carude Ndagizimana, who claims to be a refugee and resident of Bunagana, Muramba sub-county in Kisoro.

"Charles Munyaneza presented himself to Mbarara police station after getting information from the media that he was being suspected to have killed a lawyer in Kisoro district. Mbarara police delivered him to Kisoro police station for interrogation," said Kigezi Police Spokesperson Elly Maate.

According to Maate, Ndagizimana partly admits the offence. "He is connecting us to the prime suspect Munyaneza," said Maate. Ndagizimana further alleges that one Scola Nyiramajambere, a resident of Bunagana who had a Civil Suit Court is the one who hired them.

Other suspects in Police detention centres are 29-year-old Steven Mfitundinda a. k. a Season, a Boda Boda rider and resident of Kabaya village, Karambi Parish, Nyarubuye sub-county in Kisoro district.

New Vision has learnt that some of the suspects arrested had earlier threatened Sendegeya. 

According to Maate, they include 59-year-old Scola Nyirmajambere, a resident of Bunagana, Muramba sub-county, 24-old-year Issah Vianny a.ak.a Mvano, a resident of Muramba sub-county.

Maate said 59-year-old Asuman Hagumakwiha, and husband to Nyiramajambere was arrested to help Police in the investigations.

"It is alleged that he sold a piece of land at sh8m meant to hire the killers. The Case File was submitted to the Office Of DPP Kisoro for perusal and legal guidance. Upon the evidence, the six suspects will be charged in court," said Maate.
