The general consensus at the Airport as the She Cranes returned from the Vitality Netball World Cup in England was that the team played to their best and deserved their seven place finish.
It was not much of a rousing welcome but most of the people who had escorted or had gone to receive their relatives at the airport applauded the team as they disembarked from the arrivals lounge after their eleven-hour journey from England.
“They did what they were supposed to do and for me, I have no quarrels with them,” one of the special hires taxi drivers said.
Each of the players and officials received a bouquet of flowers from UNF officials and players as they came out of the lounge.
Stella Oyella who won three man-of-the-match awards at the tournament praised her teammates for the fighting spirit despite the hardships they went through before the tournament.
“Things weren’t easy but we all went out and fought; any match we lost, we never gave up and we kept on going stronger and stronger so that we could maintain our position in the ranking. Despite the experience we had, not all went well,”
“Next time we need to increase on our training because the one we had before was on and off and as a result, we missed many training sessions, that is why we declined a bit in our performance but we managed to put up a strong show,” Oyella noted.
Asked whether she got any suitors out there for a possible professional career move, Oyella said some players were spotted and that they will be contacted later.
Mary Nuba Uganda’s goal shooter said the World Cup was a good tournament that attracted good players from all participating teams.
“I think the Netball World Cup inspired many girls doing sport. For me, I gained self-confidence and it was a great experience for me being the first time to play at the World Cup but I showcased my talent to the many scouts out there,”
“I believe we had the best preparations we could under the circumstances though we had some challenges we have learned from them and we shall improve from there,” Nuba said.
