Netball: A chance for Uganda to shine in 2023

South Africa were awarded the hosting rights of the 2023 World Cup

After finishing a historical seventh at the 2019 World Cup, the She Cranes can look forward to the next edition with extra juice.

It will, after all, be home…on African soil. South Africa were awarded the hosting rights of the 2023 World Cup and they were quick to stress that it was a victory not just for the Rainbow Nation but for the entire continent.

"It (winning the 2023 hosting rights) is also about Africa because we are going to capacitate the continent in terms of coaching and the construction of facilities," said NSA president Cecilia Molokwane.

Uganda would certainly benefit from that sort of support given the infrastructural challenges of local netball.

South Africa's preparedness to support other countries on the continent certainly played a role in their selection as next World Cup hosts.

"The INF Board decided that the significant investment that the South African Government and Western Cape were prepared to make over the next four years in netball facilities and coaching programmes in South Africa, the African continent and beyond would deliver a greater impact on the development of global netball," said the INF after delivering South Africa's victory.

"It is an exciting time for netball right now. Our sport is growing in popularity at an unprecedented rate throughout the world. There is increasing competitiveness between the top nations and now three teams from Africa feature in the top 10 of the INF world rankings. We look forward to working with the Organising Committee to bring the INF's most important event to South Africa in 2023."

England undoubtedly organised a memorable World Cup, one expected to raise interest in the sport.
