Speeding taxi kills two UPDF soldiers

The dead have been identified as Lance Corporal Simon Peter Ogwang and Sergeant Luka Opira, both attached to Mubende Chief Military Rehabilitation Centre.

A speeding taxi has lost control and knocked two UPDF soldiers along Mityana-Mubende highway, killing them instantly.   

The dead have been identified as Lance Corporal Simon Peter Ogwang and his colleague Sergeant Luka Opira, both attached to Mubende Chief Military Rehabilitation Centre.

Wamala region Police spokesman Norbert Ochom said the incident happened on Sunday morning.  The deceased were riding on motorcycle number UEC 029T when a Toyota Hiace taxi number UBB 493X rammed into them.

Ochom said the taxi was trying to overtake another vehicle and narrowed the road, knocking the cyclists head-on at a place called Kakungube trading centre in Nalutunsi sub-county, Kassanda district.  

The unidentified driver fled the scene, abandoning the taxi, which was later towed away by the Police. The bodies were taken to Mubende Hospital for postmortem. 

In the meantime, the Police in Kiboga have reported the death of a man who was hit by a stray bullet while digging near Singo Military barracks.

The man, identified as Gordon Kizito, 40, a resident of Kikooba village in Kiboga district was hit by a stray bullet from Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers during a training session, according to Norbert Ochom, the Wamala region Police spokesman.   

The Police visited the scene and took the body to Bukomero Health center for a postmortem. 

Ochom said the Police were working with the authorities in the barracks to avoid such future fatalities.
