Local Government Supplement

By Vision Reporter

With more than 80% of Uganda's population employed in the agriculture sector, the importance of a market cannot be understated. The Government had that in mind when it rolled out the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Programme Project 1 (MATIP-1) in May 2010. Under the project, which ended in 2015, seven modern markets were constructed.

These included; Hoima, Jinja, Mbale, Lira, Gulu, Wandegeya in Kampala and Mpanga in Kabarole district. The markets have several facilities, including lockups, stalls, clinics, restaurants, daycare centres, police booths, offices, pharmacies, agroprocessing stores, banking facilities, parking areas and also provide local area networks.

The project was funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the African Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA). On account of that good performance, the Government secured more funding from the African Development Bank to construct 11 other markets under the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Programme Project 2 (MATIP-2). CLICK HERE FOR MORE ON THIS STORY
