The FIBA Africa Zone V U16 Championship in Rwanda is a perfect test for Uganda's grassroots campaign. New FUBA president Nasser Serunjogi promised to create a sustainable development programme.

One year into his term and a litmus test is here to gauge in part the progress of the project which he envisioned as part of the strategy to improve Ugandan
basketball.

Moving ahead

The regional meet comes following a successful secondary schools competition which has served as the main pool for national team selectors. For the federation, the schools' event presents a bigger sample size for talent on the national teams.

"There is life in the junior teams; the players are excited and ready to showcase their craft. We have prepared well for these games" said Ronnie Mutebi one of the traveling coaches.

The girls (Gazelles) open their campaign Tuesday against Tanzania, a game Uganda should win to set the pace. Silverbacks, on the other hand, open their campaign
against hosts Rwanda Wednesday in a competition that has seen Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea Ethiopia Burundi, and Egypt pull out.

The event is a qualifier for the FIBA Africa U16 Nations Championship 2019 August in Rwanda.
