USPA: Mubiru is the toast of May

He won two gold medals in the World Powerlifting Championships in Ukraine

Activities like blood donation, painting zebra crossings, visiting accident victims and sensitising bodaboda riders will helm this year's annual Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) road safety campaign due in August.

USPA president Patrick Kanyomozi revealed this on Monday during USPA's monthly assembly where powerlifter Roy Mubiru was voted Nile Special-USPA sports personality for the month of May.

Mubiru who won two gold medals in the World Powerlifting Championships in Ukraine, beat the national beach woodball team that finishing second in the world cup and athlete Jacob Kiplimo who won the Greater Manchester Run in the same month.

Mubiru pooled 300 points while the woodball team racked up 280, with Kiplimo a close third with 275.

St Mary's Kitende was commended for winning the Copa Coca-Cola schools championship, the Uganda women volleyball team for finishing second in All Africa Games qualifiers, Kasana Secondary School for winning the national juniors and Proline Football Club for winning the Uganda Cup. 

Kanyomozi said that planning for this year's road safety campaign has started and that they will be consulting USPA's partners so that a bigger impact is felt.

"We shall also involve our partners Standard Chartered Bank, City Tyres and UNRA to have an input. What I can assure you is that blood donation and sensitisation of bodaboda riders will be part of this year's celebrations," Kanyomozi noted.

USPA annually holds the road safety campaign in memory of its fallen executive members Simon Peter Ekarot, Francis Batte Jr, Kenneth Matovu and Leo Kabunga.
