Student killed as rival schools fight

The Police in Kabale is investigating circumstances that led to the death of a student during a fight between two rival schools in Kabale.

The deceased has been identified as Rogers Bakashaba, a Senior Five student at Kigezi High School in Kabale.

He was stoned to death when students of Kigezi High School ganged up and attacked those of Nyabikoni Secondary School.

According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, the incident occurred on Sunday at 3:00 pm, when a big number of students, carrying sticks and stones, attacked  Nyabikoni SS in Kanyakyiriro cell Nyabikoni ward central division Kabale municipality.

In reiteration, the Nyabikoni students overpowered them hitting the deceased with a blunt object, which injured him on the head. He bled profusely and died.

Police were notified, responded immediately and sent the students back to school.

Maate added that 28 students of Kigezi High School and one from Nyabikoni SS were arrested for questioning as inquiries get underway.

"We condemn acts of violence in schools. We shall investigate this case and whoever is found to have taken part in this fracas will be charged accordingly," said Maate.

An investigation file with reference Kabale SD 34/09/06/19 has been opened to probe this matter.

Charles Bisaati, the Kanyakyiriro cell chairperson LC1, said they were shocked to see angry students attacking another school.

"What happened here was so regrettable. There is no way students could use such strong weapons against each other," said Bisaati.
