Museveni commissions Obote Road in Lira

Lira municipal council in August 2017 signed a sh21.6bn contract with CICO for the construction of three roads in the municipality

President Yoweri Museveni on Friday commissioned Obote Road, one of the infrastructures upgraded under government's Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development program (USMID) with support from the World Bank/IDA.

Obote Road in Lira Municipality together with other roads and the beautification of Coronation Park was done by a Chinese firm, Chongqing International Company (CICO).

President Museveni commissioned the roads after addressing a rally in Abongorwot Primary School in Abongorwot village, Agali sub-county, in Lira district

"It's not possible to do all the things at the same time," Museveni said to an excited crowd that gathered to witness the occasion.

The President said the Rwenkunye, Apac, Lira, to Acholibur road will also be constructed. He said another major road in the Lango area is that from Soroti, Amuria, Obalanga, Acanpii all the way to Otuke and Adwari that will also be worked on.

The road from Dokolo to Amolatar and that from Aboke in Kole district to Bobi in Omoro district will also be worked on.

He said the major roads like that from Kampala to Pakwach through Karuma and Karuma to Gulu have been worked on and that the small ones are now being worked on.

The roads include Obote Avenue (1.38 Km), Kwania road (0.85km) and Soroti road (0.533km). The contract also entailed the beautification of Coronation Park.

The projects are designed to enhance institutional performance in municipal councils to improve service delivery.

Lands minister Betty Amongi Ongom while receiving President Museveni to commission the roads, said the central government has spent a total of sh40.18bn on the project that covers a number of roads in the area.
