EUROPEAN UNION GIVING HOPE TO YOUTH IN SLUM COMMUNITIES

Kirya (real name withheld) is a young adult living in Kisenyi. Raised by a single mother who could not aff ord school fees, Kirya did not have a fallback plan to sustain his family and himself and make meaning of it. Due to frustration and biting poverty, he joined a gang that abused drugs and stole to earn a living.

"Life was hard, I had to start fending for myself at an early age. I had no skill and getting a job was hard. Possible employers always associated us to thieves. We therefore had to look for all ways of survival even theft . It was risky and we lived in fear of being lynched. All I hoped for was an opportunity to make my life better. When AFFCAD opened in Kisenyi, I requested to study leather designing and I was lucky to be enrolled." He recounted.

Today, he is skilled in leather designing and can make belts, shoes, bags and is confident that these skills are the beginning of a brighter future. He is currently employed hopeful that his friends too will change their lives for the better.
