Leadership for global road safety launched

KAMPALA - The Ministry of Works and Transport in conjunction with the National Roads Safety Council has launched the Leadership for global safety week as a way of creating awareness to reduce road accidents.

"All motorists should respect all the traffic regulations as a way of reducing motor accidents, which is a major cause of death in the country. Drivers must adhere to the discipline by respecting others," said Aggrey Bagiire, state minister for works during the flagging off ceremony at the ministry's headquarters in Kampala on Tuesday.

 
He said 80% of the death is caused by road accidents, adding that the country lost 3,500 people and over 10,000 got injured last year.

Bagiire said the roles of traffic officers on our roads is very crucial for our safety. "Last year we witnessed the impact when the traffic officers went off the roads and the traffic flow was disturbed for 15 hours in the city," he said.

He ordered the traffic officers to arrest and charge all those who do not respect traffic laws.

"Ugandans should learn to be courteous to other road users," said Bagiire
