Teacher, baby nursing wounds after classroom collapse

NAKASEKE - A primary one teacher at Kivumu Primary School, Joyce Nansubuga, together with her four-months-old baby only identified as Peace are nursing injuries at Kiwoko Missionary Hospital in Nakaseke district after a classroom block collapsed on them during the Thursday afternoon rainstorm.

The about 38 pupils Nansubuga was teaching escaped with minor injuries.

Rose Nazziwa, another teacher at the same school who witnessed the incident said that her colleague was conducting a lesson when a strong wind blew off the roof of the entire school block.

Nazziwa said the pupils scampered to safety on sensing the impending danger leaving their teacher and her baby behind.

The Savannah police regional spokesperson Paul Kangavve said the teacher was still in critical condition by Friday due to the bodily injuries that she sustained, especially on the head.

Health personnel at Kiwoko hospital were not allowing visitors to see Nansubuga, apart from her close relatives, saying that the patient was still unconscious and needed to rest.

The Nakaseke District Education Officer Steven Batanudde said the incident was likely to disrupt classes for over 100 pupils at the UPE school after their classrooms collapsed.
