ACCIDENT

KAMPALA - Five people have escaped with minor injuries after a truck hit a train near the Mukwano roundabout in the city. But they were not severely hurt.

The Fuso truck carrying maize grain enroute to Namanve knocked the locomotive at about 5am Friday. The train driver and his assistant survived, as did three other people who were near the accident site.

Isa Kalisa, the train assistant, said the train driver hooted for long - as is procedure - but the driver of the truck did not heed the signal.

New Vision's Abbey Ramadhan went to the scene to capture the scenes:

The force of the Friday morning crash tipped the truck over.

The accident brought about heavy traffic at this busy section of the road.

Police faulted the truck driver for not heeding railway crossing traffice regulations.

It emerged that the train driver hooted long before reaching the crossing - a signal meant to warn road users of the approaching locomotive.

The truck was laden with sacks of grain, some of which spilled out onto the road.

The owners scrambled to salvage their grain.

Traffic police officers were around to manage the scene.

Some locals took advantage of the episode by picking up what was left of the spilled grain.

A similar accident happened around that area three years ago, with one person killed when a commuter taxi got in the way of a moving train.

In the 2016 accident, the driver of the taxi insisted on crossing the railway despite a traffic control warning for vehicles to stop as the locomotive approached.
