Rhino Fund Uganda is amazed to announce another birth, at 6:00am by Nandi (20.) She safely delivered her sixth calf at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
"Both mother and baby are doing well and this brings the number of rhino currently at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to 26" said Executive Director Angela Genada. "Which brings the population to 15 males and 11 females."
Nandi was one of the first six rhinos brought to Uganda. She is originally from Disney Animal Kingdom, Florida in USA. While in labor she was seen restlessly isolating herself from the herd mowing and corrugating her forehead.
Later she acted visibly containing the pain as the shy sun peeped out of the sky. 45 minutes after the new born popped out, it staggered to its feet and started looking for it's mother's teats before the eyes could open.
Rhinos were once roaming the plains of Uganda. But during the post Uhuru political turmoil, the last one was killed in 1986. Earlier on Idi Amin Dada gave some to USSR (Russia.)
The two at Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) have not been able to procreate.
"We suspect they need competition," said the UWEC public relations officer Scovia Musimenta. "The other theory floated by animal keepers is that, they hear the roar of the lion in the center. This does not augur well with the safety of their baby."
They reportedly do not take chances given such a predator (lion) in their midst.
