MALABA - Two people were crushed by a speeding trailer Monday morning along Malaba-Tororo highway.

The nasty accident occurred at Ofinya trading center, 3 kilometers from Malaba town next to Uganda Revenue Authority check point.

The deceased were identified as Nasambi Richard, a rider and resident of Naleyi village, Bubulo sub-county in Manafwa district and Salongo Dumba Juma a resident of Malaba ‘'A'' North and a re-known welder along Malaba-Koitangiro road.

According to eye witnesses the accident occurred after a speeding motor cycle they were traveling on slid off the road, as they tried to dodge a bicycle cyclist, forcing them to land on the speeding cargo truck  registration number KCG 843J/ ZE 8217.

The two were reportedly traveling back to Malaba from Tororo.

The officer in-charge of traffic at Malaba central police station Edison Twebaze attributed the accident to over speeding.

He however revealed that investigations into the incedent are underway and appealed to road users to be conscious of road signs especially along road sections that have heavy traffic.

The accident comes barely a week after another person was run over by a speeding trailer around the same section due to a narrow path created by heavy traffic jam, caused by cargo trucks passing through the URA check point.

Local and community leaders have appealed to government to consider widening the road that has turned to be a death trap and big inconvenience to travelers who are usually caught up by the traffic jam.
