WILDLIFE DAY SUPPLEMENT

By Titus Kakembo

On Sunday, Arua hosted the World Wildlife Day celebrations under the theme: Humans Living in Harmony with Wildlife. Arua was once a place that boasted the biggest herd of rhinos. "Due to the increasing confl ict between wildlife and humans, rhinos were hunted down to extinction," the Uganda Wildlife Authority, (UWA) spokesperson, Hangi Bashir says. "We urge people to be conservationists," Hangi adds. True to Hangi's claim, the rhinos were hunted to extinction with the last one killed in 1986. "Unfortunately, we do not have many rhino enthusiasts. Rhinos are only talked about in Arua by residents who have travelled to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) in Entebbe, the Ziwa Rhino Camp in Nakasongola district or those who subscribe to National Geographic TV channel," Hangi says. Because of intensifi ed forest and wetland encroachment, wildlife has less habitat and ends up in people's gardens or kraals. CLICK HERE FOR MORE ON THIS STORY
