At least 216 tourists from Israel have jetted into the country for a four-day visit, a move officials say, will boost the tourism sector in the country.

The tourists were invited by President Yoweri Museveni.

Upon arrival at the excited tourists, who flew in aboard the Israel national carrier, toured the control tour at the Old Airport, a monumental tour, whose significance dates back to 1976 when Israel commandos raided the airport to rescue hostages that were hijacked by Palestine-terrorists.

In 1976, Mossad agents rescued the hostages of a skyjacked Israeli airliner that was being held at Entebbe, Uganda.

The team, which is expected to tour the Source of the Nile in Jinja district and Murchison Falls game park in Pakwach district, jetted into the country at 2:00pm.

It was the first time that the Israel national carrier, Israel Airlines, landed in Uganda since 1976.

Yali Yativ, who headed the delegation, told New Vision that their plans for the El Al to at least make over six direct flights to Entebbe in order to boost tourism and cement the good relations between Uganda and Israel.

The government target is to at least have four million tourists visiting Uganda by 2020.

In July 2016, the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, visited Uganda, and held bilateral talks with Museveni on a wide range of issues.
