Arua Municipality, which has experienced population explosion in the last ten years now has over 61,951 people settled and conducting businesses in a 10 km sq. land area.
Arua Municipality is in the north-western region of Uganda (West Nile Region). The municipality is 540 kilometers from Kampala city, 15 kilometers from Uganda's border with the Democratic Republic of Congo the West and 75 kilometers from the Uganda-South Sudan border to the North. Created in 1972, Arua is one of the oldest municipalities in Uganda.
It was established by colonial rulers in 1914 as an administrative center for the West Nile region. In 1939 it was declared a Town Board and a municipality later in 1972. It is a civic center of Arua district administration and the largest commercial and social coordinating point in the dislrict as well as for many regional activities in the West Nile.
The total planned land area for expansion of the municipality has increased from 10sq km to 411 sq km. According to the 2014 National Population and Housing Census final report, Arua has a population of 61,951. Arua municipality is one of the fastest growing towns in Uganda.
