Notice from Ministry of Water

Consultancy service for conducting soil smapling and testing for crop production under small scale irrigation schemes in Western and lower central Uganda

Background:

The Ministry of Water and Environment through the Department of Water for Production is mandated with the development and sustainable management of water supply for agricultural production in order to modernize agriculture and mitigate effects of climatic variations on rain fed agriculture.

The promotion of water demanding livelihoods such as crop and livestock agriculture, and other development initiatives in the Western and lower central sub regions has been hampered by the limited access to adequate water supply services both for domestic use and production, especially for livestock watering and crop irrigation.

Due to the semi-arid climatic conditions, subsurface geology and topography, the sub-regions require appropriate interventions to be able to harvest and retain suffi cient volumes of water for production.

The Government of Uganda is making considerable efforts in raising the water for production coverage and availability in the Western and lower central sub regions through construction of Small-Scale Irrigation systems (5-20 Hectares) and valley tanks in a bid to enhance food production, food security and fi nding a remedy to droughts that impede agriculture productivity in Uganda.
