PRESS RELEASE: Public warning on use of adulterated herbal medicines for sexual enhancement

The popularity of herbal medicines today. There is an emerging popularity of herbal medicines worldwide, with 80% of the population in developing countries reported to use herbal remedies for their healthcare needs according to World Health Organization. Studies also show that 70 - 80% of the Ugandan population use traditional medicines for day-to-day health care, and the popularity of these remedies is well evidenced by the incessant herbal adverts in the various media platforms. Remedies of erectile dysfunction among men seem to be of most interest as research indicates that the proportion of men suffering various forms of erectile dysfunction is expected to double by 2025, with men in developing countries of Africa and Asia most affected. There has been an increasing demand for these medicines premised on their perceived minimal side effects and good natural attributes and this demand has attracted the practice of ‘adulteration'- which is the intentional addition of conventional (commonly referred to as Western) medicines in herbal products to ensure the desired effect.
