WAKISO - Bulamu mixed farm, owned by Aloysious Lubega, one of the best farmers in 2018 has organised a free farmers day for farmers from across the country.

The project, is located at Magigye/Nabutiti near Gayaza, Wakiso district, about 15.6 km from Kampala city centre, Uganda's capital and largest city.  The farm emerged second overall during the 2018 Best farmers' competition. The competition was organised by Vision Group, with support from the Embassy of the Netherlands, dfcu Bank, KLM Airlines and Koudjis Nutrition BV.

"We have organised this free of charge tour on December 29th, as a give back to Ugandans for supporting us to be among the winners in the 2018 Best Farmers competition," Lubega said.

He explained that the tour will among others include training in proper piggery and cattle management.

During the tour, Lubega will talk about the history of his farm. "When I set upon to start this farm, I wanted to give my animals the best of lives-even if ultimately, they would be slaughtered," said Lubega, the director and farm owner. Indeed, a walk around the pig and cattle houses shows you hundreds of pigs living their good lives.

Lubega noted that Bulamu mixed farm is a growing modern farm opened in 2011 with interests in local market.  Piggery, dairy cattle and fish farming are the main enterprises. While the farm too adds value to pork by processing bacon and sausages.  At the moment, the farm has over 2,000 pigs of different stages of growth and over 80 pure breed dairy cows.  This is in addition to a fish pond that keeps mainly tilapia and cat fish. All the projects sit on six acres of land.

Lubega explained that before he invested in the projects, he toured several countries, studying their good practices. "I visited countries like Spain, South Africa and Kenya, looking at their practices so that I adopt the best," Lubega said.

Some of the vital lessons that he picked and implemented included the housing systems for the pigs and cattle, the waste management systems and feeding.

"For example, we made sure that we prepared and stored silage for the cattle, large enough to take us three years," he says. The farm has got two silage pits, with a capacity of storing silage from at least 10 acres of land.
