INTRODUCTION OF THE NEW INTERNATIONAL EAST AFRICAN e-PASSPORT AND PHASING OUT OF THE EAST AFRICAN AND NATIONAL MACHINE-READABLE PASSPORTS

1. New International East African e-Passport
The Republic of Uganda is set to introduce the new International East African e-Passport to replace and eventually phase out the current East African (Blue) and National Machinereadable Passports (Black, Red and Green).

2. EAC Directive
During the 17th Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State, Their Excellencies launched the new East African e-Passport and directed the commencement of its issuance. Issuance of the current generation of Machine-Readable Passports ends in January, 2019.

3. Launch of the new International EAC e-passport.
Launch of the new International EAC e-passport. The new East African e-Passport system will officially be commissioned and the e-Passport launched at the Ministry of Internal Affairs Headquarters in January, 2019. However, a phased roll out for Ugandans with pending passport applications shall begin on December 01, 2018.

4. Features of the new International EAC e-Passport.
The new International EAC e-Passport will be a physical Passport like the one we have been having, but will be embedded with a secure electronic chip which will contain more details including biometric features of the holder and a biodata page which will have special security features. It also has more security features in form of the Coat of Arms, the Crested Crane, the Mountain Gorilla, the Independence Moment, Murchison Falls and the fishing man. It is the most secure and reliable document for international travel by ICAO standards. The new e-Passport and its system presents an opportunity for the Ministry of Internal Affairs as a key milestone in government's drive towards e-government service delivery. CLICK HERE FOR MORE ON THIS NOTICE
