It is down to the top four, down to the very best of the Kampala Premier Tennis League.

Second season in the running, the league which was designed with a far reaching impact in mind has already registered positives.

Ugandan top players Borris Aguma, Simon Ayella, David Oringa Paul Ssekandi have since as a result of increased game time through the league, earned ATF rankings. The local competition was a preparatory ground for Uganda's representatives at the Davis Cup last year.

The girls have equally shaped their game following the inaugural edition of the four- month league that started in the fall of last year.

Winnie Birungi, a teenager who was part of the team that represented Uganda at the previous Fed Cup harbours appreciation to the KPTL.

"The KPTL helped us to prepare well for the Fed Cup and I just want to continue exploiting this opportunity" Birungi says.

In an all-inclusive manner the league rules require all teams to atleast have one female player in their ranks.

"Interestingly, the first edition was huge and we hope to end this one on a high. A lot of people are following our activities as we try to break new ground among people that had no idea about the game" said Moses Bashaasha, chairman of the league. The playoffs were launched Wednesday at Lugogo.

Defending champions Team Titans hope for a repeat of last year with a winners trophy and sh1.5m at stake.

It is worth noting that the renaissance of Ugandan Tennis is slowly but surely taking shape especially after Uganda was reconsidered back on the ITF Programme.
