A group of women hailing from Kigezi sub-region in western Uganda have started a crowd-funding drive to support maternal health and education in the area.

The group known as Kigezi Home Girls which comprises of working women recently launched a campaign to improve health, education and sanitation in the region.

Carol Beine, the chairperson of the group said early next year they would choose at least one hospital in the region and raise funds for health supplies including beds and medicines.

"Many girls don't go to school during menstrual periods, so we want them to stay in school and know that periods are a normal thing and natural for every growing woman to experience," said Nyemera.

The women's group was established in 2016 and has 25 active members who hail from the region. Each of the members of the group currently pays tuition for at least one child from Kigezi.

Sharon Shyaka, one of the founder members of the group said she was inspired to participate in the project after she was diagnosed with cancer, which  she was lucky to recover from.

Shyaka, who lives in the United Kingdom, said the health scare gave her new perspective on life and forced her to think about how she could contribute to her hometown.

Kigezi sub-region covers the four districts of Kabale, Kanungu, Kisoro and Rukungiri.  According to Abigail Victoria, a member of the group, the region is grappling with low literacy levels, early marriages, high maternal deaths and effects of climate change.
