Police seize napkins from Byanyima

The Police on Wednesday seized 24 pieces of red napkins from the residence of Edith Byanyima in Muyenga, Kampala.

Edith is a sister to Winnie Byanyima, the wife of former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), president Col. (rtd) Kizza Besigye.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigire, says the raid was prompted by intelligence information that illicit materials were going to be used to incite violence. "Since our duty is to detect and prevent crime, our officers went there and indeed obtained 24 red pieces of cloths," Oweyesigire said.

Red ribbon is linked to opposition politicians and they adopted it during the age limit debate last year.

However, Owoyesigire said so far no charges have been preferred against Edith pending conclusive investigations.

According to the search warrant seen by New Vision, the raid was intended to recover exhibits required in investigation of case number SD11/03/10/2018.  

However, Edith did not append her signature on the said search warrant although one of her lawyers, Eva Nabitaka signed on it.

Others said to have witnessed the search include Ambrose Benomugisha, Rose Kwangero, Munaku, Alex Saturday, Yusuf Ssenyonjo and John Olaqi.

Prior, Edith attempted to block the search on grounds that the officers lacked a search warrant. She had also requested them to wait for her lawyers before the search but in vain.

Her lawyers who included Francis Bwengye and Kampala lord Mayor Erias Lukwago arrived after the search.
