KAMPALA - The water and environment ministry has said that by the end of this year, a water information system will be in place.

The system will provide information on the different projects the ministry is undertaking, such as dams and development of water resources around the  country.

Dr. Callist Tindimugaya, who is in charge of the water resources planning and regulation department, said they have prepared 14 catchment management plans in Uganda, five of which are in Kyoga water management zones.

"This year, we are moving forward to implement the other plans," he said.

"We have a number of valley tanks that are going to be constructed, but we are also doing this with resources from development partners, GIZ, World Bank and Austria."

The ministry is also supporting work to adequately address water and environment issues in refugee settlements.

This was revealed during the official handover of two vehicles to the Directorate of Water Resources Management through Climate Change Adaptation by Dieter Anders, the head of programme at Enhanced Water Security and Sanitation (ENWASS).

The function took place at the ministry headquarters in Luzira, in Kampala on Wednesday.

"The purpose of these vehicles is to help water management zones with transport. The distances in Karamojong are long and the terrain is quite challenging," Dieter said.

"We, as GIZ, decided to support water management zones as part of a fulfilment of our pledged support."

Dieter said the vehicles will be a step forward in the management of water resources.

Receiving the vehicles, Alfred Okot Okidi, the ministry permanent secretary, said the vehicles will be a foundation of their planning and they will go to Karamoja water management zone.

"For us in the ministry, we have had a lot of support from GIZ towards planning in catchment areas. We shall put these vehicles to excellent use."
