Two people were pronounced dead while three others sustained severe injuries in a road accident that occurred at Triangle Village along Njeru-Kayunga road on Wednesday morning when a car collided with two motorcycles.

Eyewitness Abdul Swamadu said the car, a Toyota Noah registration number UAX 551X, from Kayunga heading to Nile was speeding while speaking on phone when the accident occured.

Mariam Namakula, 32, a resident of Naminya in Wakisi division in Buikwe district died on the spot while Henry Kafuko, 28, a resident of Bugembe town council in Jinja district, died on his way to Jinja Hospital.

The Njeru division Police commander, Christopher Ruhunde said the injured were receiving treatment at Jinja Hospital.

Residents in the area asked Traffic Police to tighten road operations especially targeting trucks that ferry sugarcane along the road.

Ruhunde told New Vision that the unidentified driver of the car attempted to take off after the accident but he was apprehended by residents and is now in Police custody.

"The suspect is charged of reckless driving and over speeding, because that was the cause of accident. We strongly caution all road users to abide by the road rules and regulations and always follow the road signs," Ruhunde said.
