UPC celebrates the life of Kofi Annan

Annan died at the age of 80 on Saturday after a short illness.

KAMPALA - The Uganda People's Congress (UPC) has celebrated the life and work of the former United Nations Secretary General and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kofi Annan.

Addressing journalists during the weekly party press conference at Uganda House in Kampala on Wednesday, the Party President, Jimmy Akena, said: "UPC joins Ghana, Africa and the rest of the world to celebrate the life and work of Late Koffi Annan."

Annan died at the age of 80 on Saturday after a short illness.

He was a Ghanaian national, who lived in Switzerland. He was also was a career diplomat who projected quiet charisma and widely credited for raising the world body's profile in global politics during his time as UN chief, from 1997 to 2006.

He quickly became a familiar face on television, with his name making newspaper headlines, and he was a sought-after guest at gala events and New York dinner parties.

UPC credit Annan for being instrumental in finding a solution when Kenya went into flames during the 2007 election violence.

"This indeed commendable," Akena said.
