Up to sh122m will be up for grabs weekly courtesy of a new betting application part of whose proceeds will go towards grassroots football development.

The app called Fanleague was launched in Uganda on Saturday by Fanleague Limited and another local betting house Poolbet.

The app, which allows players to win cash prizes by predicting the outcome of up to 13 English football matches, will have participants winning £25,000 a week from as low as 20p (sh980) a week.

"There will also be a big Corporate Social Responsibility component off our proceeds," stated Mikael Forslund, the company's Head of Custormer Experience.

"10% of the gross collections will go towards grassroots sports development. In the long run, we would like to see Uganda winning the World Cup."

Forslund, flanked by Fortbett director Markus Beermann in Kampala on Thursday, likened Fanleague popularity applicability to Facebook.

Uganda is the first African country where the application has been launched. Details on the application can be accessed on the company's website www.fanleague.com.

To set the app rolling in Uganda the first 1000 people to register were each given £5 (sh23,399) for an entire season.

Other Poolbet directors Wycliff Nuwagaba and Abdulrahim Dewo stressed Fanleague emphasizes responsible betting.

"While you can bet for as low as sh980, you can't also spend more than £125 (sh125,000) a week," stated Nuwagaba.

"It is also strictly restricted to only adults," said Dewo.

Fanleague started in  Sweden before its current updated version that is now global.
