ENTERTAINMENT

It was a festivity for the Ugandan Hip-hop community and fans at YMCA basketball court on Saturday Night. From rappers, break dancers to beatboxers, the Kampala Hip-hop Explosive show had a line-up of some of the hip-hop favorites around town and entertainment that lit up the night.

Break dancers first warmed up the crowd with a charming display of agility in a freestyle session that saw fans cheering on.

By the time the night's MC, Jora, introduced music performances, the audience was already in the revelry mood.  So Pryce Teeba, the artist of the year in Hip Hop Awards, was simply apt to set the rapping affair rolling. He was the crowd's beloved and fans were not only bobbing, but also chorusing along throughout his act.

But before rappers fully took over, young beatboxers from Breakdance project Uganda (BPU) enthralled the audience with their ability to verbally make beats.

And Sandra Nankoma brought in the singing beat to the show, before St Nellysade hit the stage to work up the crowd with his comical lyrics like Rap Up 2017 single that recounts the major events in 2017.

From popular acts like Lyrical G, The Mith, Slyvester and Abramz, to Lady Slyke and DJ Nesta performing some of their hits, every artiste that hit the stage added a unique flavour to the whole fanfare. Freestyle sessions dominated the evening, with rappers backed by beatboxers, to the enjoyment of the fans.

The show was crowned up with an act by Ryme Like A Girl, a collective of three female rappers from the US.

Courtesy of US Mission and Breakdance Project Uganda, the free event was part of the Arts Envoy Uganda 2018, a two-week programme that had forums and workshops regarding the world of art in Uganda. The programme that runs from August 1 to 15, had discussions and trainings on navigating the art business.
