WAKISO - The Bishop of Kasana-Luweero Diocese, Paul Ssemwogerere has commended the Wakiso district chairman, Matia Lwanga Bwanika for his endless efforts towards protecting the environment.

Bishop Ssemogerere said, a number of people were destroying the environment save for Bwanika, who stood firm to conserve nature.

Citing the long standing sand row, the prelate said; "Bwanika loves environment to an extent that he was seen exchanging blows with some of the foreign investors on Lake Victoria."

The Kasana- Luwero bishop made the remarks during a recent thanks giving ceremony to celebrate of the life of Jane Nabbosa 82, mother to Bwanika, at Namulanda in Kajjansi town council, Wakiso district.

The Bishop said Bwanika's efforts are a true sign of passion for the environment.

"I have seen him closing factories in wetlands, restoring others and also clashing with some of the district leaders who try to protect those destroying the environment," he added.

Bwanika recently clashed with district councilors who had vowed to pass a resolution endorsing sand mining in Lake Victoria.

He also closed a number of illegal occupants including industrialists and farmers who were bent to destroy more than 200 acres of the wetland in different parts of the district.

Ssemogerere attributed the rampant environmental destruction to greed and corruption that continues to hit the country.

"Ugandans have become too greedy and corrupt to the extent of selling their environment," he noted.

The evet was also graced by the Supreme Mufti Sheik Suleiman Ndirangwa, who cautioned leaders against greed.

Quoting Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi's words, the Supreme Mufti said; "I implore parents and leaders at various levels to preach against greed saying it has led to gripping corruption in the country."
