Lubega gears up for Nyilawila bout

The Tanzanian boxer is a former WBF middleweight champion

Former WBC International champion, Joseph Lubega is back in search of another title in a bid to stay a champion for the next three years before he retires from the ring.

Lubega, 36, will take on Tanzania’s Karama Nyilawila on August 25 at Lugogo Hockey Ground for the vacant Universal Boxing Organization (UBO) cruiserweight title.

Lubega from the amateur ranks to win a silver medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, before turning professional in 2006.

He won the WBC Intercontinental title in 2012 that he defended twice before losing it to South Africa’s Ryno Liebenberg in 2014.

Despite losing two recent fights and drawing one, Lubega has a respectable record of 39 fights, 20 wins, 16 loses and 8 draws with 18 knockouts. He also once held the British Masters middleweight title.

Nyilawila, 34, who came into the limelight in 2005, is a former WBF middleweight champion.

 “We want to promote high-profile boxers so that Ugandans can have memorable moments of boxing as the case is in Las Vegas,” said A and B Promotions manager Acram Iga.

The other fight on card will be a non-title contest between Muhammad Sebyala and Tanzania’s Ramadan Omari in the middleweight category.

The evening will also have a national UPBC national heavyweight title at stake between Hudson Muhumuza (9 fights and 3 KOs) of Police Club and Nicholas Buule (7 fights, 5 KOs).

The local undercard fights will be between Stanley Mugerwa taking on David Ochan, Muzilaim Koloma and Brighton Peter Luggya, Yusuf Babu and John Owino.
