RUKIGA- A 70-year-old man on Tuesday afternoon collapsed and died instantly during the Local Council Election in Kirembe Village, Kandago Parish, Bukinda Sub County in Rukiga district.

The Kigezi regional Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, identified the deceased as Deziderio Tumwineho, who collapsed from where he was seated. He could not confirm the cause of death.

‘No election chaos in Kigezi'

Unlike in some areas such as Jinja, among others where the just concluded LC1 elections were marred by scuffles and protests that resulted in teargasing and arrests by security agencies, Maate says the elections in Kigezi region were peaceful.

He said there were few complaints of missing names from the registers.

"They are two administrative units of Kirundo sub-county and the newly created Rubuguri Town Council in Kisoro district where elections did not take place due to," he said.
