Mulago National Referral Hospital is the main referral hospital in Uganda. Founded in 1913 as a treatment center for STDs, the hospital has since expanded to provide referral services to both national and international patients and doubles as the main teaching hospital for the Makerere College of Health Sciences.

The hospital also serves as a general hospital for the greater Kampala Metropolitan. The hospital is currently undergoing reconstruction and rehabilitation wherefrom two new specialized hospitals, Mulago Maternal and Neo Natal hospital and Mulago National Specialized hospital will be established.

This will bring the total bed capacity to about 3,000. It is envisaged that due to the expansion the hospital will receive on a daily basis over 10,000 visitors. To address the congestion that may arise from this expansion the hospital through the PPP Unit of Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development intends to construct a multistoried car park complete with other amenities on its land.
