UPDF soldier killed in accident

The accident was caused by a lorry which had been parked by the roadside without any warning signs.

 

ROAD ACCIDENT

OYAM- A Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) soldier attacked Bombo army barracks died on the spot while his brother, a colonel in the army survived narrowly when their vehicle crashed into a parked lorry on Friday evening.

The incident occurred shortly before 8:00pm at Ngato swamp in Myene sub-county, Oyam district, along the Kamdini Gulu highway, between Amwa trading center and Minakulu, about 12km from Kamdini town.

The vehicle, a Ranger Rover Registration number UAT 946 U was being driven by Lt Col Simon Peter Oyoo, a military assistant to Minister of State for Defence (General Duties)  

The colonel was traveling to his home in Gulu district with his dceased brother only ifentified as WO1 Omona

Lt Col Oyoo said he survived because of putting on the seat belt and airbag after knocking the parked lorry belonging to sinohydro, the company constructing the Karuma hydro power station. 

The truck loaded with sand had developed a mechanical problem.

The body of the deceased was taken to Gulu 4th Division Mortuary where a postmortem would be carried out.

Oyam district traffic officer Basti Chemutai, who visited the scene, said the lorry caused the accident because it had been parked without any warning signs.

The number of death due to accidents on the Kampala Gulu Highway has reached 34 in less than two weeks. 

Last Friday 23 people died when a Gaagaa bus from Lira to Kampala knocked a tractor, lost control and collided with a trailer in Kiryandongo. 

Another accident happened on Saturday May 19 also on Kiryandongo where five people including the Deputy CAO of Amatar died.

The third accident happened in Oyam district the same week killing five people
