Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) Monitoring and Evaluation of Low Volume Road Sections in Uganda

The Research for Community Access Partnership (ReCAP) is a six-year programme of applied research and knowledge dissemination funded by a grant from the UK Government through the Department for International Development (DFID). The overall aim is to promote safe and sustainable rural access in Africa and Asia through research and knowledge sharing between participating countries and the wider community.

One of the ways in which ReCAP is promoting safe and sustainable rural access in Africa is through Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) monitoring of low volume roads; and making the data available on the regional database that was developed under the Back-Analysis Project.

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has set out to have 20,000 km of fi rst class roads with comfortable riding experience, predictable travel times and safe journeys by 2025. As a drive towards fulfi lling this vision in a sustainable and cost effective manner, UNRA is exploring the applicability of non-conventional and local materials through construction of trial sections as well as assessment of their performance. In continuation of this effort, UNRA requested support from ReCAP for setting up a LTPP monitoring programme for the trial sections.
